A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these treatments should be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
