Cyclone the storm is projected to escalate to a uncommon category five cyclone as it shifts in the direction of the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening flash flooding and landslides.

The hurricane, which recorded wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning north-west in the Caribbean region and is projected to hit the coast by Tuesday, according to meteorological authorities.

Advisories of electricity outages and structural damage have been issued as the hurricane produces up to thirty inches of rainfall and coastal flooding as high as 4m above ground. "Take cover without delay," residents have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th named hurricane in the ongoing Atlantic storm period, which usually concludes in the eleventh month.

Category Five Storm Threat

A highest-level hurricane is the strongest type, with winds of at least 157mph.

While the hurricane is projected to weaken to a fourth-level hurricane before making landfall on the island, authorities said there was "very little practical difference in the general consequences" upon landfall, and that the hurricane will be "just as powerful" when it strikes the nation.

Immediate Preparations

With tropical storm-level gusts and precipitation already expected well before it crosses central Jamaica - possibly even the city of Kingston - advisories state that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"An extended timeframe of destructive gusts and torrential rain has started and will cause devastating and dangerous sudden floods and many mudslides," advised climate experts.

The nation's leader the statesman said: "I realize that there are countless citizens who are worried, who are extremely apprehensive, and rightfully so: worry is natural.

"However the optimal approach to manage nervousness and any unease and concern is to be prepared."

Locals are being instructed to fortify their houses with protective bags and timber panels, and to stock up on basic necessities.

Wider Impact

Advisories are also ongoing for parts of Haiti including the main city, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and eastern Cuba, where Melissa is anticipated to bring analogous consequences by the middle portion of the coming week.

Rock slides currently triggered by the hurricane have already killed two in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Projected Trajectory

Melissa is predicted to pass over the island nation by Wednesday before traveling via the Greater Antilles and emerging into the Atlantic.

By the time it reaches the Caribbean nation, it is predicted to have reduced to a category three hurricane.

Environmental Connection

Even though it is challenging to link individual weather events to global warming, researchers say it is making weather phenomena more common and more intense.
